The Republican base tends to be older, which has forced the party to get

The Republican base tends to be older, which has forced the party to get creative when reaching out to younger voters. Earlier this year, for example, the RNC unveiled a pitch to millennials featuring a young man with ill-fitting clothes, awkwardly reading cue cards on energy policy. Last year, a Koch-financed group rolled out ads featuring someone in a creepy Uncle Sam costume with a giant head eager to perform gynecological exams.

But arguably nothing is quite as jaw-dropping as the latest Republican ad campaign targeting young women, which msnbc’s Irin Carmon described as the party’s “most condescending ad yet.”

The College Republican National Committee thinks it has unlocked the key to speaking to young women about pending gubernatorial elections: Make it about pretty wedding dresses. That’s how the party is attempting to win over a demographic it has long struggled to attract.

The committee is spending $1 million on digital ads like “Say Yes to the Candidate.” Each one show a young woman eagerly browsing wedding dresses, in the mold of TLC’s “Say Yes to the Dress,” and treating each prospective dress as if it were a real-life candidate for office.

As best as I can tell, nearly identical ads have been created for Republican candidates in Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina. Each ad features a young woman named Brittany shopping for a wedding dress, facing pressure from her mother to buy a less appealing Democratic dress, and then celebrating the Republican dress instead.

In the Florida ad, for example, the young woman uses five words never before uttered together in the English language: “The Rick Scott is perfect.”

Last month, the Republican message was that politics is like a lingerie party. This month, the Republican message is that politics is like shopping for a wedding dress.

Sometimes. it’s hard not to wonder whether Republicans are trying to drive women voters away on purpose.

Indeed, with an ad this dumb, GOP officials must realize that they risk creating a backlash. Time’s Charlotte Alter called the wedding-dress video “the most sexist Republican ad of the year,” which probably isn’t the headline party leaders were hoping for just a month before Election Day.

The more I watch the ad, the more inexplicable it becomes. The implication seems to be that young women are more right-wing than their parents’ generation, which isn’t even close to being true.

For that matter, if the target audience really is young women, talking down to them and comparing public affairs to dress shopping is the kind of message that’s actually quite insulting. As Esther Breger put it, “Voting is hard, right ladies? Luckily, the College Republican National Committee is here to help put things in terms we’ll understand: wedding dresses. Also reality shows.”

Amanda Marcotte added, “At this point, it’s hard not to wonder if the people being hired to do outreach to women on behalf of Republican candidates aren’t all a bunch of Democratic moles.”

Indeed, as happy as the College Republican National Committee might be with its ads, I have a hunch it’s Democrats who are far happier.

Love & Hip Hop: Joseline Hernandez Left BET Awards In Tears

Love & Hip Hop: Joseline Hernandez Left BET Awards In Tears
Reportedly the infamous bully of Atlanta’s Love & Hip Hop reality show, Joseline Hernandez, left the BET Hip Hop Awards recording in tears. The show was taped in Atlanta on September 20th but will not air for the public until October 14, 2014. According to many celebrities in attendance, Joseline who is known to “fight” for attention, did not like the spotlight she received at her own expense.

Twitter exploded with tweets from attendees claiming Joseline was the brunt of many of the jokes during the show. It was reported that everyone thought the jokes were hilarious, except Joseline. Although the “Puerto Rican Princess” is heard dishing up the one liners on every episode of Love & Hip Hop Atlanta, when the tables turned the mean girl of reality television did not take the comedic spin-off well at all.

Joseline has a hard shell for a front but she is really just a little girl on the inside who has never healed from a painful past. Before being discovered by Stevie J, her supposed husband, she performed as an exotic dancer. She gained fame from reality TV as the girl who takes no mess and attacks anyone that crosses her the wrong way.

Rarely, if ever, is Joseline’s name mentioned void of drama. Fans of Love & Hip Hop Atlanta are still talking about her erratic behavior on the reunion show. Joseline appeared to be out of control as she viciously attacked multiple cast members. Security did their best to harness her antics but failed miserably as she went from person to person swinging.

Multiple reports emerged after the episode aired stating her behavior was indeed a result of drug issues, as co-star Benzino mentioned before the fight began. A lawsuit filed after the fight stated Joseline smoked crack before the show was taped. It has also been alleged that she and her man Stevie J’s addictions are so bad they have emptied their bank accounts and lost their “rented” mansion trying to support their drug habit.

Supposedly the couple is leaving Love & Hip Hop Atlanta to star in their own spin-off reality show. Stevie J and Joseline are sure to bring the drama but rumors say they have drummed up more than met the eye last season. The couple is having a baby. This is not the first time Stevie J has impregnated the queen of drama, a few years ago she admittedly had an abortion because she Love & Hip Hop Joseline Hernandez Left the BET Awards In Tearswas angry with him.

After the way Joseline has consistently behaved on the show one would think she would have been able to handle a few jokes coming her way. Apparently not, Joseline was backstage crying instead of laughing along with everyone else.

Fans of the show were shocked to learn that the “Baddest Puta” was reduced to tears after seeing her flip over tables and lash out at cast members, including  her “husband.” www.lover-fashion.com Hip Hop Clothing Stores Hip Hop Dance Clothing Stores

Chicago’s Lyric Opera hosts costume sale

Chicago’s Lyric Opera hosts costume sale
Looking for a Halloween costume? Chicago’s Lyric Opera is selling about 3,000 pieces from its handmade costume wardrobe to the public. Prices range from $1 - $200,
and some of the garments are nearly 100 years old.
Already on the lookout for a Halloween costume? Or possibly your next Comic Con or Renaissance Faire outfit? The Lyric Opera of Chicago has got your back.
This Saturday marks only the second time in Lyric history that the company will be selling some 3,000 pieces of their handmade costume collection to the public.
Costume Director Maureen Reilly said the Lyric doesn’t have enough room in their storage for all of the costumes - some dating back almost 100 years.
Some costumes, she said, have even become a bit repetitive.
“I think our Madame Butterfly and our Boehme are really gorgeous, but they’re 30 and 40 years old. So if you’ve been a season subscriber since you’ve been 20 or
something, you’ve seen the same Boehme every 10 years or 8 years, so you want something new and different,” Reilly said.
Prices range from $1 to $200, but Reilly said most garments are actually worth thousands of dollars. Some of the costumes come from as far away as Europe, while others
were made in the United States. Shoppers will find items from operas like Pirates of Penzance, Voyages of Edgar Allen Poe, Anna Bolena, Otello, Flying Dutchman,
Rigoletto, Don Carlo and more.
The last and only other time the Lyric held a sale like this was in 2004, when the company’s warehouse in Pilsen was sold. They sold around the same amount of
costumes, and brought in nearly $77,000. All the money goes back to the Lyric Opera.
This weekend’s sale will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Grand Foyer of the Civic Opera House.
